Shepherd’s Bounty Cheviots have style and traits unique to our farm.

Home of pure bred Border Cheviot sheep, careful selections

are made to bring out the best qualities of this oldest and

hardiest of sheep breeds.

Cheviots are known as “The Perky Profitable Breed” for good reason… more head per acre, more profit per season.

Border Cheviots are one of the smaller commercial breeds,

weighing between 130 and 200 pounds at maturity. This

manageable size makes them incredibly efficient grass to

lamb converters which means we can sit back and watch

our lambs grow big and strong on pasture and free-choice

mineral.

A great start to the season

Border Cheviots are an alert resilient breed, with ewes that

experience few lambing problems, the lambs are vigorous,

and ewes are protective and attentive mothers.

Invaluable life skills are learned when raising a lamb for a 4-H project.

Border Cheviots make ideal show animals for 4-H and other

youth projects bringing in the next generation of sheep

producers.

The Border Cheviot is a grand feeder and thrives on high or low land.

Our ewes and rams demonstrate excellent breed character, are

structurally sound and thick, are very feed efficient and maintain

themselves on grass. They have excellent taste, texture and

tenderness which translates to very high yielding, high quality,

and high value carcasses.

Prelude to the Cheviot

When the morning stars first sang together on the dawn of creation and looked down upon an unpolluted earth, if they then saw the Cheviot sheep grazing on the hillsides, the fact would not surprise us and we believe the beauties of that glorious morning would have been enhanced thereby.

If the flocks of Abel were composed of this illustrious breed we can appreciate the divine wisdom that prompted its conception, selection and perpetuation.

If the “white ewes” referred to in the Songs of Solomon were Cheviot ewes, we can readily imagine the beauty of the “Bride’s teeth” and can appreciate the poet’s inspiration.

If the sheep left to care for themselves, by “the wise men of the East” while they journeyed to Bethlehem of Judea, were Cheviots we cannot but feel that they in their wisdom knew full well that these sheep were capable of taking care of themselves.

We believe that the Cheviot history antedates all sheep lore, and for beauty, usefulness and self reliance they are unexcelled, and might well have participated in the great world dramas referred to above, and that the breed can be perpetuated with pleasure and profit by the wise men of today.
