Welcome to the Shepherd’s Bounty Blog

This webblog is dedicated to the individual that yearns for the lifestyle of owning a small piece of land and raising sheep on it.  Experience what it would be like to step away from a lifestyle that society has encompassed and delve into a time honored tradition of shepherding.  We at Shepherd’s Bounty will share with those that have a curiosity in farming with sheep an insight as to the happenings and lifestyle of working our small flock of Border Cheviot sheep.  Step back, experience the joys and delights of providing fiber and nutritious food raised by our own hands for your family to take pleasure in and become more closely connected with the land.

What kinds of information will we be posting?  Shepherds Bounty will provide a window into the daily life of our farm.  You will experience the seasons as they pass.  You will be informed when lambing time has arrived, the start of our year.  Next will be shearing time, grading and processing the wool for markets around the world.  Health and welfare checks of the flock, along with hoof care and internal parasite control is next on the calendar.  Discover what is involved with pasture management and come along with us as we take groups of excited children on tours of the farm.  Join us at the fairs as we compete against others that own the Cheviot breed and finely wrap up the year by selecting future breeding stock and marketing the rest of the lambs to our loyal customers.  During the winter season we will often times share with you crafts that others are creating with wool and let you in on a favorite lamb recipe that our family delighted in the night before, and maybe those that were not such a great hit.

We will cover topics that enlighten those that are interested in the Border Cheviot breed of sheep.  We will provide details of the Cheviot fleece to those that are interested in spinning and weaving this unique wool.  For those that are interested in acquiring future breeding stock we can advise you with our nearly forty years of experience with this distinctive breed. Providing information about the Border Cheviot history, the pros and cons of owning this breed and details of our flock of Cheviots and what attributes they have that other breeds do not, will be covered.  Market lamb costumers will become informed as to the unique qualities of the Cheviot carcass and the natural way we raise and market a superior product.

We are doing this because we wish to share our experiences with others of the shepherd’s life on a small scale farm.  Joys, sorrows, anxiety, and freedom, are all part of management in this wonderful business venture.

With best regards,

Shepherd’s Bounty
